India Upgrades Kabul Mission to Embassy Status; Jaishankar Commends Taliban

Published:

India officially upgraded its technical mission in Kabul to full embassy status on Friday, a pivotal move in re-establishing its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan. This announcement came during a crucial meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi.

Following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, India withdrew all its officials from the Kabul embassy. However, in June 2022, a technical team was redeployed to Afghanistan, setting the stage for limited operations. The latest upgrade signals India’s intention to enhance engagement focused on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security cooperation.

“Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan,” Jaishankar stated, emphasizing the significance of the meeting. He reiterated India’s commitment to Afghan development, citing, “As a contiguous neighbour and a well-wisher of the Afghan people, India has a deep interest in your development and progress.”

The minister further highlighted India’s enduring partnership with Afghanistan, referencing previous major projects completed in the region. He praised the Taliban administration for displaying “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” particularly in light of the recent Pahalgam terror attack that impacted the nations’ security dynamics.

Jaishankar remarked on the mutual commitment both nations share towards growth, stability, and prosperity, emphasizing the urgent need to address cross-border terrorism. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he stressed, reinforcing India’s stance on security and cooperation.

In his address, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi expressed gratitude towards India for its consistent support, labeling it as an essential regional ally. He appreciated India’s humanitarian efforts and expressed the Afghan government’s interest in expanding partnerships in trade, infrastructure, and education.

The upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul highlights New Delhi’s cautious yet strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led administration. The move centers on addressing security concerns while promoting stability in the region and nurturing long-standing ties with the Afghan populace.
