Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday leveled serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that every sixth BJP MP in the Lok Sabha won their seat through ‘vote chori’ or vote theft. He questioned whether these MPs should be referred to as ‘ghuspethiya’, a term insinuating illegal infiltration, as per the party’s own rhetoric.
Gandhi’s sharp comments came during a social media post, where he stated, “Through vote theft, sometimes individual seats are stolen, and at other times, an entire government.” He emphasized that approximately 40 BJP MPs out of the total 240 in the Lok Sabha, secured their positions through fraudulent means.
In a further critique, he declared, “They are not hard to identify – should we, in the BJP’s own parlance, label them ‘ghuspethiya’? And what of Haryana? There, the entire government itself is an ‘ghuspethiya’.”
Gandhi accused the BJP of manipulating institutions for their political gain, stating, “The very institutions they keep in their pockets – the ones they manipulate to distort voter lists and the electoral process – are themselves ‘remote-controlled’.” This attack reflects the Congress party’s ongoing challenge to the BJP’s legitimacy ahead of looming elections.
He projected that if fair elections were conducted, the BJP would struggle to win even 140 seats in the Lok Sabha, emphasizing their reliance on questionable tactics for electoral success. These remarks came in the wake of the BJP experiencing significant victories in various regional polls, including the recent assembly elections in Bengal and Assam.
Earlier this week, Rahul Gandhi termed the BJP’s victories a “theft” of the mandate, indicating a broader concern for the state of Indian democracy. He characterized these victories as moves that threaten to dismantle democratic foundations in the country.
Showing solidarity with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following its defeat in Bengal, Gandhi appealed to detractors celebrating the TMC’s loss. He remarked, “Some in the Congress, and others, are gloating about TMC’s loss. They need to understand this clearly – the theft of Assam and Bengal’s mandate is a big step forward by the BJP in its mission to destroy Indian democracy.”
He urged people to set aside petty politics, saying, “This is not about one party or another. This is about India.” These statements illustrate Gandhi’s strategy of positioning Congress as a defender of democratic values, even against fellow opposition parties.
The BJP’s recent successes in state elections have not only bolstered its political influence but have also sparked debates regarding electoral integrity in India. As regional dynamics shift, the Congress party seeks to galvanize public sentiment over perceived election fraud, framing it as a critical moment for the nation.
Whether these allegations will resonate with voters as the 2024 general elections approach remains to be seen. What is evident is the intensifying political discourse surrounding fairness and transparency in India’s electoral processes, as leaders from both sides gear up for a fiercely contested political landscape.
