The annual Amarnath Yatra, a significant pilgrimage for millions, faced disruptions on Friday as officials suspended the journey from the Baltal route due to inclement weather. The suspension aims to ensure the safety of pilgrims while allowing necessary repair work to proceed on the track.
Heavy rains pounded the Baltal area late Thursday night, even triggering a minor flash flood in one location. Fortunately, officials reported no loss of life or damage to property arising from the adverse weather conditions.
As a precaution, no pilgrims have been allowed to proceed towards the holy cave shrine from the Baltal route, according to statements from local authorities. They emphasize the ongoing repair work is essential to maintain pilgrim safety during the Amarnath Yatra, one of India’s most revered spiritual journeys.
The pilgrimage season commenced on July 3, and since then, approximately 4.5 lakh devotees have already visited the sacred site housing the naturally formed ice lingam. The pilgrimage offers spiritual solace and is a testament to the faith millions hold in this revered shrine.
The Amarnath Yatra is expected to conclude on August 28, coinciding with the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, making this suspension particularly poignant as many pilgrims anticipate the event. Local meteorological officials urge devotees to monitor weather updates and announcements regarding the yatra’s resumption for safety and planning.
Officials are hopeful that the weather conditions will improve soon, allowing repairs to complete safely while accommodating the influx of visitors once the pilgrimage resumes.
