The Congress party intensified its campaign against the BJP-RSS on Monday in response to a controversial statement made by former ABVP leader Printu Mahadev, who issued a death threat targeting Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi. This incident raises serious questions about the political climate in India.
During a press briefing, Congress media head Pawan Khera condemned the remarks, calling them part of a “chilling and heinous” conspiracy orchestrated by those desperate to silence Gandhi as they face an ideological defeat.
Khera stated, “A BJP spokesperson said on TV that ‘Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest’ and no action has been taken.” He further emphasized that such blatant threats highlight the deteriorating atmosphere of political discourse in the country.
Concern arises over security for Gandhi. Khera pointed out a previous letter from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge regarding Gandhi’s safety, which appeared to have been leaked. This politicization of Gandhi’s security raises alarming questions about the motives behind it.
“This stinks of a conspiracy meant to distract and silence those who challenge the ruling party’s narrative,” Khera said. He further articulated that the BJP lacks ideological tools and is now resorting to threats, unable to process the growing popularity of Gandhi’s positions on national issues.
Khera claimed that the BJP’s attempt to phase out Gandhi through intimidation reflects their fear of losing the ideological battle against the Congress party. “People from Kashmir to Kanyakumari resonate with Gandhi’s vision, and the BJP knows their time is dwindling,” he asserted in a video statement.
In a separate statement, Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal voiced his concerns directly to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He demanded a swift response to Mahadev’s remarks made during a televised debate, warning that failure to act would imply complicity in endorsing violence against the Leader of Opposition.
Venugopal stated, “This chilling death threat is not mere hyperbole but a calculated act to undermine democratic values in India.” He emphasized that when a spokesperson of the ruling party issues such threats, it undermines both the Constitution and the rule of law.
The Congress leader further urged the Home Minister to clarify the government’s stance on such rhetoric, pointing out, “Do you openly endorse the politics of criminal intimidation and violence that poisons public life in India?” His call for accountability stresses the need for governmental integrity in safeguarding democratic processes.
He added that the threat against Rahul Gandhi symbolizes a broader assault on democracy, as it endangers not just an individual but the values he represents. Venugopal’s remarks mirror the urgency felt by many political commentators regarding the ever-increasing hostility in political debates.
He reiterated that a lack of immediate, decisive action would be seen as a license for the normalization of such violence against political figures, which poses a grave threat to democratic discourse. Venugopal urged the state police to take exemplary legal action to ensure justice is served promptly.
As the political landscape in India grows more contentious, the incident reflects a worrying trend where violence and intimidation threaten to overshadow essential democratic principles. The Congress has vowed to protect its leaders from such threats and continues to challenge the BJP’s governance strategies.
