DRDO Successfully Launches Agni-Prime Missile from Rail-Based System

Published:

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully launched the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime Missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system on the morning of October 24, 2023. This achievement integrates cutting-edge technology and enhances India’s operational readiness.

The Agni-Prime missile, capable of striking targets up to 2,000 km, features advanced technological innovations. According to a statement from the Defence Ministry, the missile is a significant addition to the country’s strategic arsenal.

The historic launch occurred from a specialized rail-based mobile launcher designed to navigate the rail network without pre-conditions. This next-generation system offers unparalleled cross-country mobility and enables a rapid launch with minimized visibility, reinforcing India’s deterrence capabilities.

“This launch marks a pivotal moment in India’s defence journey,” said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. “It positions India among select nations that possess canisterised launch systems capable of being rapidly deployed from a rail network.”

The Agni-Prime missile is self-sustained and incorporates independent launch capabilities, sophisticated communication systems, and advanced protection mechanisms. These features enhance its effectiveness while ensuring technician safety during operations.

During the launch, ground stations meticulously tracked the missile’s trajectory, confirming it was a textbook operation that met all mission objectives. The successful test paves the way for future rail-based missile systems to be inducted into service.

Officials from the DRDO and SFC closely observed the launch. The earlier variant, the road mobile Agni-P, had already been inducted into armed services following numerous successful flight tests.

In a congratulatory message posted on X, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated the significance of this successful missile test, stating, “This development underscores India’s military modernization and operational preparedness.”

Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO praised the participation of all teams involved in this successful mission, emphasizing the unity and hard work behind such a landmark achievement for India.
