National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah praised the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government’s efforts to restore tourism in the region after the tragic Pahalgam attack, where 26 people, mostly tourists, lost their lives. On September 27, Abdullah welcomed the reopening of various tourist destinations, underlining the significance of tourism to both the local economy and community.
In an official statement, Abdullah extended warm greetings to residents of Jammu and Kashmir and to admirers of the region’s unparalleled natural beauty, as the world celebrated World Tourism Day. He reflected on tourism’s role not just as an economic activity but also as a vital part of J&K’s social fabric.
“As the world focuses on the importance of tourism, let us reaffirm our commitment to reviving this essential sector, which provides livelihoods for thousands in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. Abdullah acknowledged the swift actions of the Omar Abdullah-led government in restoring tourist confidence, crucial for establishing J&K’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently announced the reopening of several tourism spots that had been closed following the April 22 attacks. This initiative plays a key role in catalyzing the region’s recovery from the aftermath of violence and instability.
Abdullah emphasized the need for a focus on sustainable tourism practices that protect the environment and preserve the rich local culture. “The reopening of tourist destinations is a positive step, but we must also advocate for inclusive development across all regions, including Chenab and Pir Panjal,” he stated.
The NC president expressed that this World Tourism Day should remind everyone of the collective responsibility to foster a peaceful and progressive Jammu and Kashmir. “We envision a region where every visitor feels valued, and every citizen can benefit from tourism-led growth,” he remarked.
In summary, Farooq Abdullah’s remarks highlight the significant leap towards revitalizing tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. The efforts made by the government and community play a crucial role in ensuring that tourism continues to thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.
