Ladakh LG Reviews Security Situation After Clashes, Calls for Vigilance

Published:

In light of the recent violent clashes in Leh that claimed four lives and left 90 injured, Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta held a crucial security review meeting on Thursday, advocating for heightened vigilance to ensure peace across Ladakh.

During the meeting, which convened amidst a shutdown triggered by demands for the extension of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and statehood for Ladakh, Gupta stressed unity among citizens. He stated, “Peace and harmony are the foundation of Ladakh’s identity. Together, we must protect this legacy and ensure the safety of every citizen.”

The shutdown, called by a faction of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), spurred significant unrest in the region. The LG office noted that Gupta’s meeting involved key figures such as Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal, Director General of Police S D Singh Jamwal, and senior Army and ITBP officers, showcasing government commitment to maintaining order.

“The safety and well-being of citizens remains our top priority,” Gupta emphasized, directing officials to uphold a constant monitoring mechanism of the ground situation. He called for closely coordinated efforts among civil and security agencies to ensure rapid responses to any arising challenges.

Gupta articulated the need for strengthening intelligence-gathering systems and enhancing community engagement in maintaining harmony, vital for preempting further unrest. He urged, “Ladakh has always been known for its peace, harmony, and brotherhood. However, certain anti-social elements are trying to disturb this atmosphere. We must confront such attempts head-on.”

This sentiment echoed a broader theme of resilience, as Gupta outlined Ladakh’s developmental strides since becoming a Union Territory in 2019 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He proclaimed, “Our focus is on building a prosperous, peaceful, and developed Ladakh. No disruptive force will be allowed to derail this progress.”

Addressing the incident’s aftermath, Gupta revealed that of the 90 injured, three individuals were brought deceased to SNM Hospital, Leh; one was declared dead on arrival. The seriousness of injuries varied from seven critically injured and 20 with major trauma to 61 sustaining minor injuries. Gupta highlighted the medical response, stating that 50 patients received discharge the same day, while seven underwent major operations and 45 blood transfusions occurred.

A critically injured patient was airlifted to New Delhi for advanced medical treatment, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the health of its residents. Currently, 18 patients remain hospitalized, with health officials ensuring comprehensive care for them.

The Lieutenant Governor’s focus on medical support underscored a broader commitment: “Every life is precious, and we assure all families of comprehensive medical care for those affected.” Following his directives, the deputy commissioner of Leh visited SNM Hospital to support families and patients in distress.

As Ladakh grapples with the aftermath of the clashes, the commitment of the administration to safeguarding peace, security, and public order becomes increasingly vital. Gupta concluded his address with a message of solidarity, pledging unwavering support from the government to the citizens during these testing times.

The events in Leh serve as a reminder of the delicate balance required to maintain communal harmony, urging leaders to engage in dialogue and cooperation.
