Modi Celebrates RSS Centenary, Unveils Coin and Stamp

Published:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Wednesday at its centenary celebrations, commending its unwavering commitment to the principle of ‘nation first’ despite numerous challenges it has faced over the years. Held in Nagpur, the event marked a significant milestone for the organization founded in 1925.

In his address, Modi underscored the RSS’s profound contributions to the nation, particularly its role in fostering societal harmony by bridging divisions of caste and creed. He stated, “The Sangh has fought against British atrocities, provided refuge to freedom fighters, and its visionary founder, Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, endured several imprisonments during our struggle for independence.”

The Prime Minister reflected on the historical resilience of the RSS, which has encountered bans and false allegations. He quoted Madhav Golwalkar, a revered former chief, emphasizing the organization’s harmony even amid adversity: “At times, the tongue may get caught under the teeth, but we do not break the teeth.”

Modi highlighted the Sangh’s staunch faith in democracy during critical periods, such as the Emergency. He stated, “Two core values – oneness with society and faith in constitutional institutions – have consistently anchored swayamsevaks during crises.” This commitment to resilience strengthens the core of the RSS’s operations across India.

During this celebratory event, Modi unveiled a special ₹100 commemorative coin and a postal stamp, designed to honor the organization’s century-long journey. The coin, featuring the national emblem on one side and a depiction of Bharat Mata in Varada Mudra alongside a lion and devoted swayamsevaks, marks a historic first as it presents Bharat Mata on Indian currency. The postal stamp celebrates the RSS’s participation in the 1963 Republic Day Parade, symbolizing its long-standing commitment to national pride and unity.

“This is a moment of immense pride for our nation as Bharat Mata graces Indian currency,” lamented Modi, acknowledging the significant shift this representation brings to cultural symbolism.

The Prime Minister further recounted the Sangh’s dedicated service during pivotal moments in Indian history, focusing on events such as the 1962 war, the refugee crisis of 1971, and the communal riots in 1984. He expressed the RSS’s enduring principles of equality, compassion, and unity as vital elements that continue to guide the organization today. Recognizing the calling from the current Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat for “one well, one temple, one cremation ground,” he praised this mantra as essential for transcending societal discrimination.

In response, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale expressed gratitude towards the government for acknowledging the Sangh’s ongoing commitment to national service. He described the coin and stamp as a fitting tribute to the selfless work carried out by swayamsevaks since the inception of the organization.
