CHANDIGARH, Sep 20 — Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a surprise visit to Ghogripur village in Haryana’s Karnal district on Friday to meet the family of Amit, a young man injured in an accident abroad. According to the family, Gandhi had previously met Amit during his recent trip to the US.
Local Congress leaders were unaware of Gandhi’s visit until he arrived in the village, highlighting the unexpected nature of the trip. This visit comes just two weeks before the October 5 Haryana assembly elections, where the Congress party aims to reclaim power from the ruling BJP, focusing on issues like farmers’ welfare and unemployment.
Amit’s brother, Ajit, shared that Gandhi arrived at their home around 6 AM, with some nearby families joining the visit. He explained that Amit, who went to the US for better opportunities, had suffered a serious accident months ago and is currently struggling to recover. The family had sold a small piece of land and mortgaged their home to support Amit’s journey abroad.
Ajit noted that Gandhi assured them of assistance during this difficult time, discussing topics such as agriculture and unemployment. Amit’s mother, Bhimmati, mentioned that Gandhi spent about 90 minutes at their home, during which they shared tea and connected with Amit via video call.
Villagers remarked that many young people from their community have gone abroad in search of work. Rahul Gandhi has a history of making unannounced visits to Haryana, previously engaging with locals and farmers in similar spontaneous interactions. His commitment to understanding grassroots issues was evident during earlier visits, including a memorable trip where he participated in agricultural activities and listened to the concerns of truck drivers on a night journey from Delhi to Chandigarh.
