Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, inaugurated the two-day Annual Sports Meet-2025 of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar today at the Boys Hostel playground in Bemina. This event marks an important occasion for students and faculty alike to showcase their athletic talents.

During her address, Minister Itoo emphasized the vital connection between physical fitness and mental well-being for healthcare professionals. She stated that maintaining good health contributes significantly to the quality of healthcare delivery, urging all attendees to recognize the importance of staying active.

The Minister applauded GMC Srinagar for hosting the event, citing that sports and recreational activities play a crucial role in stress management. In high-pressure environments, such as medical fields, engaging in sports helps individuals cope better and enhances their overall performance.

Additionally, she encouraged the GMC administration to improve facilities at the Boys Hostel playground. Upgrading the infrastructure will foster greater participation in extracurricular activities, ultimately benefiting both students and professionals in their pursuit of a balanced lifestyle.

The Annual Sports Meet, planned and organized under the guidance of Chairman Sports Committee Dr. Salim Iqbal, features an array of sporting events designed to encourage teamwork and friendly competition. Programs include popular activities like cricket, volleyball, football, badminton, and table tennis. Traditional games such as carrom, tug of war, and musical chairs also add a festive atmosphere to the meet.

A variety of track and field events—like the 100m, 200m, 400m, relay, shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw—exhibit the sporting spirit of the participants. Fun games such as the matka race, sack race, and spoon and egg race inject energy and laughter into the proceedings, fostering a sense of community among the participants.

The inaugural ceremony drew significant attendance from the esteemed Principal Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Administrator Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, and various Heads of Departments, alongside medical superintendents, faculty members, students, and staff. Their presence underlined the collective commitment to promoting health and wellness within the medical community.

As the Annual Sports Meet-2025 unfolds, it stands as not just a display of athletic prowess but also as a celebration of unity, resilience, and the holistic development of those in the medical field. Such initiatives serve as a reminder that prioritizing physical health is essential, especially for those tasked with the well-being of others.
